犬の十戒はインターネットで世界中に広まった作者不詳の短編の詩です。原文は英語です。あちこちのサイトで多くの皆さんがいろいろに訳していて、意味がちょっとずつ違っていますけれど、ニュアンスは同じ。
原文がいちばんしっくりくるはず・・・なのですが、原文は十戒とあるとおり、情緒的な散文・詩文というよりも、戒律のような乾燥した内容になっています。最後の落としどころに向かっての、中盤までのその乾燥感がまたいいのかもしれません。
今回、映画版に仕事でほんのちょっとだけ関わったついでに、遅ればせながら犬の十戒について触れてみます。僕が自分でしっくりとくるように訳に手を加えていますけど・・・
犬を飼う身からすると、実に身につまされる内容です。しかし、これを読んで勘違いする人もいそうです。犬を思いやることと甘やかすことは大違いです。では叱ればいいのかといえば、感情的にならず、心は常に冷静に、がルールだと思ってます。自分の感情が高ぶっているときには、犬に限らず叱らないように心がけています(^^;;
（犬の十戒）
1：私は１０年ほどしか生きられません。ですから、できるだけ私といっしょにいてください。
My life is likely to last ten to fifteen years.
Any separation from you will painful for me.
Remember that before you buy me.
2：私と気長につきあってください。
Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3：私を信じてください。それだけで私は幸せです。
Place your trust in me- it's crucial to my Well-being.
4：（あまり叱りすぎないでください）あなたには学校もあるし友達もいます。でも私にはあなたしかいません。
Don't be angry at me for long and don't lock me up as punishment.You have your work, your entertainment and your friends.I have only you.
5：私にたくさん話しかけてください。人の言葉は話せないけれどわかっています。
Talk to me sometimes.
Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice when it's speaking to me.
6：私にも心があることを忘れないでください。
Be aware that however you treat me, I'll never forget it.
7：私を叩くまえに思い出してください。私はこの強い歯をあなたに向けないと決めていることに。
Remember before you hit me that l have teeth that could easily crushthe bones of your hand but that I choose not to bite you.
8：私があなたの言うことを聞かないときは、そのわけを感じてください。
Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate or lazy,ask yourself if something might be bothering me.Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, or I've been out in the sun too long or my heart is getting old and weak.
9：私が歳をとってもどうか仲良くしてください。
Take care of me when I get old . you, too, will grow old .
10：私が死ぬときは、どうかそばにいてください。あなたがそばにいるだけで、どんなことでも安らかに受け入れられます。そして、どうか覚えていてください・・・私がずっとあなたを愛していたことを。
Go with me on difficult journeys.
Never say, I can't bear to watch it or Let it happen in my absence.Everything is easier for me if you are there.
Remember, I love you.
